Kolachi Mural
Fish species such as Kolachi Mural and Padikkan Mural inhabit the surface waters of the near-shore sea.
In the 1980s, a type of shore seine known as 'Kolachi Madi' was a familiar sight along the coast of Thiruvananthapuram. What distinguished it from a standard shore seine was the attachment of coconut or palm fronds at close intervals along the hauling rope. As the net was pulled, these fronds created a rustling sound, driving the surface-dwelling Kolachi fish into the net and preventing them from escaping past the rope. This technique was an indigenous innovation of the fishing community.
However, as Kolachi Mural are no longer as abundant as they once were, the 'Kolachi Madi' is no longer in use. Instead, fishers now employ a type of 'Kankus' net designed specifically for use on the sea surface; a video of this method can be viewed in this register.
