ശംഖ്‌ ഞണ്ടുകൾ (Shankhu njandukal )/ Hermit crab
ശംഖ്‌കൾക്കുള്ളിൽ വസിക്കുന്ന ഞണ്ടുകൾ ആയതിനാലാണ് ഇവയെ ശംഖ് ഞണ്ടുകൾ എന്ന് വിളിക്കുന്നത്. ഇതിനപ്പുറം കടൽപ്പണി സമൂഹത്തിന് ഈ ഞണ്ടുകളെ പറ്റി കൂടുതലായി അറിയില്ല. സാധാരണ ഞണ്ടുകൾക്ക് അവയുടെ ശരീരം പൊതിഞ്ഞു കട്ടിയുള്ള തൊടുണ്ട്. ഇവയ്ക്ക് അതില്ല. മൃദുവായ ശരീരമുള്ള ഈ ഞണ്ടുകൾ ശഖ്‌കളുടെ ഒഴിഞ്ഞ കട്ടിയുള്ള തോടുകൾക്കുള്ളിൽ ജീവിക്കുന്നു. ശംഖിനുള്ളിൽ പറ്റിയിരിക്കുകയും കാലുകൾ നിലത്തൂന്നി സഞ്ചരിക്കുകയും ചെയ്യുന്ന കടലിനടിയിലെ വീഡിയോ എഫ് എം എൽ പകർത്തിയിട്ടുണ്ട്. പ്രതികൂല സാഹചര്യമുണ്ടാകുമ്പോൾ അവ ശംഖിനുള്ളിൽ ശരീരം മുഴുവൻ ഒളിപ്പിച്ച് വെറുതെ കിടക്കുന്നതിലൂടെ ഇരപിടിയന്മാരിൽ നിന്നും രക്ഷപ്പെടാൻ കഴിയും. ശരീരം വളരുന്നതനുസരിച്ച് ഇവ പുതിയ കവചമായി വലിയ ശംഖ്‌കളെ തിരഞ്ഞെടുക്കും. തിരുവനന്തപുരത്ത് വർക്കല,വിഴിഞ്ഞം മേഖലകളിൽ ഇവയെ ധാരാളമായി കാണാം.

Hermit Crabs (Shankhu Nandukal)

Hermit crabs are known locally as Shankhu Nandukal because they live inside empty shells. Beyond this, however, the coastal fishing communities have relatively little information about these fascinating crabs.

Unlike ordinary crabs, which have a hard shell covering their entire body, hermit crabs have a soft, unprotected abdomen. They use the hard, empty shells of marine snails as protective shelters. Underwater video documented by FML has captured them clinging to the inside of shells while moving along the seabed with their legs.

When threatened or exposed to unfavourable conditions, hermit crabs can withdraw their entire soft body into the shell and remain hidden, protecting themselves from predators. As they grow, they move into larger empty shells that provide adequate protection for their bodies.

They are found in abundance in the coastal areas of Varkala and Vizhinjam in Thiruvananthapuram.
