Nasvakkathi

The Nasvakkathi possesses a body structure distinct from that of typical marine fish; a defining feature is its pointed chest area, which flattens out into a semi-circular shape.

In the past, before barber shops existed in coastal regions, barbers would set up by the roadside to offer haircuts and shaves. The razors they used during that era bore a striking resemblance to the shape of this fish. Furthermore, these barbers belonged to a community known as 'Nasvan' (also referred to as 'Pilliyan'). Consequently, they named this fish—which mirrored the shape of their razors—'Nasvakkathi'.

As the fish has relatively little blood, it is excellent when fried with a coating of ground black pepper.

Its availability has now significantly declined.
