ഒക്ടോപ്പസ്സുകൾ/ അവക്കണവ / നീരാളി ( Octopus / Avakkanava / Neeraali )

ശരീരത്തിനകത്തോ പുറത്തോ കട്ടിയുള്ള അവയവങ്ങൾ ഒന്നും ഇല്ലാത്ത ജീവിയാണ് ഒക്ടോപ്പസ്സുകൾ. കന്യാകുമാരി ജില്ലയിലും കൊല്ലത്തും ട്രോളറുകളിൽ നിറയെ നീരാളികളെ പിടിച്ചുകൊണ്ടു വരാറുണ്ടെങ്കിലും തിരുവനന്തപുരത്ത് ഉപജീവനത്തിനായി നീരാളികളെ പിടിക്കാറില്ല. അപൂർവമായി കമ്പവലകളിലും വിഴിഞ്ഞം കോവളം മുതലായ ചിപ്പി കോളനികളിലും വലിപ്പം കുറഞ്ഞ നീരാളികൾ സ്ഥിരമായി കാണുമെങ്കിലും അവയെ തിരികെ കടലിലേക്ക് തന്നെ വിടുകയാണ് പതിവ് . ചിപ്പി കോളനികളിൽ ഒക്ടോപ്പസ്സുകൾ കുഞ്ഞുങ്ങളെ വിരിയിക്കാറുണ്ട് എന്നതിന്റെ തെളിവാണ് അവിടെ സ്ഥിരം അവയുടെ കുഞ്ഞുങ്ങളെ കാണുന്നത്.

ഒക്ടോപ്പസ്സുകളുടെ തലയോട് ചേർന്ന് ശരീരത്തെക്കാൾ നീണ്ട സക്കർ പോലുള്ള പീലികൾ ആണ് നീരാളികളുടെ പ്രത്യേകത.

Octopus

The octopus is a creature that lacks any hard body parts, whether internal or external. Although trawlers in the Kanyakumari district and Kollam often bring in large catches of octopuses, they are not targeted for a livelihood in Thiruvananthapuram. While small octopuses are frequently found in shore seine nets and shellfish colonies such as those at Vizhinjam and Kovalam the common practice is to release them back into the sea. The regular sighting of their young in these shellfish colonies indicates that octopuses hatch their offspring there.

A distinctive feature of the octopus is the presence of sucker-bearing appendages attached to the head, which are longer than the body itself.
