(Pothakal) / Gobi fishes

Pothakal

They are known as 'Pothakal' because they inhabit crevices in rocks located underwater or along the coastline.Although found in various habitats, those living in tide pools possess certain unique characteristics. They are capable of surviving for hours on coastal rocks. Typically, if a fish is caught from the sea and placed on land, its skin color gradually changes, and it eventually dies; however, 'Pothakal' remain unharmed even after basking in the sun on rocks for extended periods.Another notable feature is that, despite being vertebrates, they can bend their bodies into an 'S' shape to maneuver up and down the rocks.Their pectoral fins contain numerous spines, allowing them to prop themselves up on the rocks and hold their heads high.
