Kallukanava cuttlefish with broad bodies and thick flesh. Beneath their outer skin, they have a hard / Thottukanava (Cuttlefish)

Kallukanavas are cuttlefish with broad bodies and thick flesh. Beneath their outer skin, they have a hard internal structure known by different names such as thodu, naakku, and kakkotti. Since these cuttlefish have a shell-like structure, some coastal communities call them Thottukanava (“shelled cuttlefish”), while others call them Kallukanava because of their thick, hard, stone-like flesh.

In earlier times, they did not have much demand because of the belief that eating them could cause stomach pain. However, by the 1970s, demand for cuttlefish increased considerably in international markets. As a result, Kallukanava began fetching a higher price than many other fish.

Like other cuttlefish, Kallukanavas lay their eggs in underwater beds and remain in the same area until the young cuttlefish grow. They have been observed moving in pairs close to-like structures. While ordinary squid generally have small fins on either side toward the rear of their bodies, Kallukanavas have long fins is how, about a quarter of a century ago, fishermen along the coasts of Thiruvananthapuram and Kanyakumari began using the shore, particularly in areas with rocks and other structures.

Cuttlefish have appendages around their heads, two of which function as arms. These also have sucker-like structures. While ordinary squid generally have small fins on either side toward the rear of their bodies, Kallukanavas have long fins extending along both sides of their bodies. Watching them move these fins and suddenly change colour is a beautiful sight. Cuttlefish move backwards.

As cuttlefish gained commercial importance, fishermen began looking for ways to catch them more efficiently. This is how, about a quarter of a century ago, fishermen along the coasts of Thiruvananthapuram and Kanyakumari began using a technique known as Akkiti.

A coconut frond is tied to a sand-filled sack, and plastic bottles with their caps on are attached to the fronds so that the structure remains upright on the seabed. The location of each Akkiti placed underwater is also marked using GPS.

Within a few weeks, cuttlefish come to these structures and lay their eggs—particularly Kallukanava, Soochikanava and Pelakkanava. The advantage is that fishermen can continue catching cuttlefish from the same location for several weeks. They do not have to wander around searching for natural spawning grounds.

Since the cuttlefish are caught using hooks and lines, the eggs and young cuttlefish are not destroyed. This is an important advantage.

However, there is a very serious environmental problem. As this practice has grown, it has reached a dangerous stage where hundreds of thousands of plastic bottles are being introduced into the sea every day.

Other than the use of plastic bottles in making Akkiti, there appears to be little wrong with this ingenious invention by the fishermen themselves. That particular problem needs to be solved.

But isn't there another question we should also be asking?

Even after a quarter of a century since this practice began, why have the officials and researchers responsible for developing marine-related technologies still not been able to develop an environmentally friendly alternative to plastic bottles for use in Akkiti?
