(Vankada)

Vankada
"If the Vankada shoal arrives,
Sorrows will vanish...
If the Velavu shoal arrives,
Prayers will be answered...”
These are the opening lines of a traditional song sung by generations of coastal communities. The lyrics reflect a time when the "Vankada" fish was available in abundance, helping coastal dwellers alleviate their sorrows and settle their debts. Today, such a sight is nowhere to be seen.
"Vankada "is considered a fish that travels through the mid-ocean regions. As it has a thick, tough skin, it is a fish that is typically skinned before being cooked into a curry
