അതവകൾ (Athavakal)/ Barnacles
കട്ടിയും മൂർച്ചയുമുള്ള തോടോടുകൂടി പാറകളിൽ പറ്റിയുറച്ചു വളരുന്ന ഒരിനം ജീവിയാണ് അതവകൾ അഥവാ Barnacles. ഇവയുടെ വായ്ഭാഗം തുറന്നിരിക്കുമെങ്കിലും അതിനുള്ളിൽ നിന്നും തൂവൽ പോലെ ഒരവയവം പുറത്തേക്ക് വരികയും തിരികെ ഉള്ളിലേക്ക് പോവുകയും ചെയ്യുന്നത് കാണാം. പാറമുകളിൽ ഉറച്ചു വളരുന്ന അതവകൾ അതിനുള്ളിലെ ജീവി നശിച്ചു കഴിഞ്ഞാൽ ഉറച്ച തോടു മാത്രമായി പാറമുകളിൽ അവശേഷിക്കുന്നതും കാണാം . കവടി പോലുള്ള ചില ചെറു ശംഖ്കൾ അതവകളുടെ ഒഴിഞ്ഞ കൂട്ടിൽ മുട്ടയിടാറുണ്ട്. ചില പാറപ്പാരുകളുടെ പുറം മുഴുവൻ ചത്തതും അല്ലാത്തതുമായ അതവളാൽ നിറഞ്ഞിരിക്കുന്നു. അതിലൊന്നാണ് മുളവറക്കല്ല് ഒന്ന് . അതവകൾ കൂടുതലായി വളരുന്ന പാറകളിൽ ചിപ്പികൾ അധികം വളരാറില്ല.
കടലിൽ ഒഴുകി നടക്കുന്ന തടികളിലും, പ്ലാസ്റ്റിക് ഉൾപ്പെടെ മറ്റേതൊരു ഇനം പാഴ് വസ്തുക്കളിലും മറ്റും പറ്റിവളരുന്ന വെളുത്ത നിറത്തിലുള്ള മറ്റൊരു ഇനം അതവയുണ്ട്. ഇവ പാറപ്പാരുകളിൽ വളരുന്നത് കണ്ടിട്ടില്ല. രണ്ടു പാളികളോടുകൂടി ഏതാണ്ട് ത്രികോണാകൃതിയിലാണ് ഇവയുടെ ഘടന. അതവകൾ ഭക്ഷ്യയോഗ്യമല്ല.

Barnacles are organisms that grow firmly attached to rocks, encased in thick, sharp shells. Although their oral opening remains exposed, one can observe a feather-like appendage extending outward and retracting back inside. Once the organism within dies, only the hard shell remains attached to the rock. Certain small, cowrie-like shells often lay their eggs inside these empty barnacle shells. Some rock formations are entirely covered with barnacles both living and dead; 'Mulavarakkallu' is one such example. Barnacles and oysters rarely thrive on the same rocks. There is another white-colored variety of barnacle that attaches itself to floating logs, plastic debris, and other types of waste in the sea; these are not typically found growing on rock formations. They have a roughly triangular structure composed of two plates. Barnacles are not edible.
