(Raalukal ) / Lobsters

Lobsters are among the most commercially valuable creatures found in rocky coastal waters. There are various species of lobsters, and their primary diet consists of shellfish. They possess teeth capable of crushing the hard shells of these mollusks. Although they inhabit rocky crevices, fishermen report that they venture out at night; consequently, specially designed traps are placed within these rocky gaps. Shellfish are used as bait inside the traps to lure them in, and the traps are retrieved the following day with the catch inside. In recent times, lobsters have also been caught through night-time free-diving using underwater torches. Most marine creatures remain motionless when a torch beam is directed at their faces at night. In contrast, during the day, lobsters will attempt to defend themselves by brandishing their large pair of legs the moment one approaches with a camera. 'Ghost nets' abandoned fishing nets snagged on rocky reefs pose a severe threat to lobsters, as their physical structure makes it impossible for them to escape once entangled. While they move slowly when walking along the seabed, they can propel themselves backward through the water at great speed. The Vizhinjam, Mullur, and Kovalam areas were once the most prolific regions for lobster catches off the coast of Thiruvananthapuram; however, with the exception of Kovalam, these areas have been partially destroyed due to harbor construction.
