കടലിൽ ചെറുതും വലുതുമായ ഏതൊരു നിർമ്മാണം നടന്നാലും താമസംവിന അത് ജീവജാലങ്ങൾക്ക് തണലും ആഹാരവും സംരക്ഷണവും നൽകുന്ന പരിസ്ഥിതിയായി രൂപപ്പെടും.
വലിയതുറ കടൽ പാലത്തിന് ഒരു പ്രത്യേകതയുണ്ട്.
ഇന്ന് നിലവിലുള്ള പാലത്തിന്റെ വടക്കുവശത്തായി പണ്ടുണ്ടായിരുന്ന ഇരുമ്പുപാലം 1947 നവംബർ മാസം 23 ഞായറാഴ്ച വൈകിട്ട് അഞ്ചുമണിക്ക് എസ് എസ് പണ്ഡിറ്റ് എന്ന കപ്പലിടിച്ച് തകരുകയും അതിന്റെ അവശിഷ്ടങ്ങൾ ഇപ്പോഴും കടലിനടിയിൽ തന്നെ കിടപ്പുണ്ട്. റെയിലുകൾ, ഇരുമ്പ് തൂണുകൾ, പൈപ്പുകൾ, അന്ന് ഉപയോഗിച്ചിരുന്ന സ്റ്റീം എൻജിൻ, ക്രെയിൻ, ബോയിലർ മുതലായവയെല്ലാം ഇപ്പോഴും കടലിനടിയിൽ ഉണ്ട്. കൂടാതെ ഇന്ന് നിലവിലുള്ള അപകടനിലയിലായ കടൽ പാലത്തിന്റെ തൂണുകളും മത്സ്യങ്ങൾക്ക് തണൽ ഒരുക്കുന്നു. പാലത്തിന്റെ പടിഞ്ഞാറേ അറ്റത്ത് അഞ്ചു മീറ്റർ ആഴമാണുള്ളത്. ക്രെയിനുകൾ കിടക്കുന്ന ഭാഗത്ത് കടലൊഴുക്കിൽ ഒരു കുഴി രൂപപ്പെടുകയും അവിടം കരത്തേട് എന്ന ഇനം മത്സ്യങ്ങൾ അവയുടെ ആവാസ ഇടമായി മാറ്റുകയും ചെയ്തിട്ടുണ്ട്. തീരംവരെ നീണ്ടുകിടക്കുന്ന റെയിൽപാളങ്ങൾ ചില സീസണുകളിൽ മണലൊഴുക്കിൽ മൂടിപ്പോവുകയും അടുത്ത സീസണിൽ അത് തെളിഞ്ഞു കാണുകയും ചെയ്യും. വത്തപ്പാര, വേളാപാര കൊടുമ്പല്ലി മുതലായവ അവയുടെ പ്രജനന ഇടമായി ഇവിടം ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്നതായി മനസ്സിലാക്കുന്നു.

Valiyathura Pier.

Any marine structure whether small or large quickly transforms into an ecosystem that provides shade, food, and protection for marine life. The Valiyathura pier has a unique history. An older iron pier, which stood to the north of the current structure, was destroyed on the evening of Sunday, November 23, 1947, after being struck by the ship SS Pandit; its wreckage remains on the seabed to this day. Rails, iron pillars, pipes, and the steam engine, crane, and boiler used at the time still lie underwater. Additionally, the pillars of the current pier which is now in a dilapidated state provide shade for fish. The water depth at the western end of the pier is five meters. A depression formed in the seabed due to currents near the area where the cranes lie, and a species of fish known as Karathedu has made this spot its habitat. The railway tracks extending toward the shore are sometimes buried by shifting sands during certain seasons, only to be revealed again in others. It is understood that species such as Vathappara, Velappara, and Kodumpalli use this area as a breeding ground.
