Thedukal

Various species of Thedu (a type of bottom-dwelling fish) are found in waters ranging from the near-shore areas to the deep sea.The variety found close to the shore is known as Karathedu.FML has identified a permanent habitat for these fish in Thiruvananthapuram. It is located near the Valiyathura sea pier, where they were photographed moving and living in shoals. This is a significant marine discovery. Coastal history reveals a traditional practice among fishers of locating the habitats of various fish species and catching them by using suitable bait. Species similar to those found in backwaters have also been discovered among the rocky outcrops of the near-shore waters; they inhabit the crevices at the very base of these rock formations. Apart from these two types, other Thedu species inhabit the seabed in the open sea.Decades ago, a fishing method known as Mattu was used to catch these fish. The Mattu method involves attaching baited hooks at regular intervals along a long line. At that time, pieces of squid were used as bait on these hooks. The prepared lines were lowered to the seabed, and upon retrieval after a few hours, the catch would include Thedu. It was through this fishing practice that Thedu was identified as a demersal (bottom-dwelling) fish. Today, there has been a significant decline in the availability of all Thedu species.Coastal communities also had a tradition of cooking Thedu roe (eggs) as a delicacy. Additionally, a unique organ not found in ordinary fish can be found inside Thedu fish. Located beneath the throat, it is a white, heart-shaped, multi-chambered structure. Coastal communities call this 'Vappu'. It is also edible.
