Champ, Korali, Velameen

These fish are commonly known as "Emperor fish." There are various species of "Champ "found in the sea; one specific variety, characterized by a pointed and elongated snout, is known as "Oriya Champ." Their primary habitats are rocky seabed formations or platform reefs. Since the waters off Kanyakumari district have an abundance of such rocky reefs compared to Thiruvananthapuram, Champ are found there in large numbers. In areas where they are plentiful, they are caught using the "long-line" method—a technique that employs hundreds of hooks simultaneously. Although Champ resemble Chemballi (Red Snapper) in appearance, they do not match the latter in taste or market value. However, many hotels serve Champ under the name Chemballi; often, even the hoteliers themselves may not realize the difference.
