KARAKAL
Many species of Kara fishes were available once, in the sea of Thiruvananthapuram. In the past, Karakal could easily be obtained in large quantities through the Thatttumadi fishing process. Although they are generally termed as small fish variety, including Chaluvakkara and Chatakkara are among the quiet large and meaty varieties. The species called Vattakkara is good to eat as dried up Karuvaad even without cooking it. Many generations of people had been sustained by Karakal, during the days of extreme poverty along the coast. Many of the Kara fishes that were available back then are no longer found now, and most of them are threatened, endangered or even extinct. Among Kara fishes, a species called Varakkara lives on the coastal reefs. Their speciality is when they open their mouths to catch prey, their lips protrude out.
All the children along the coast of the past would have experienced guarding the Kara fishes or other variety fishes that were sun-dried on the coconut palm leaves laid out on the sandy shores.
