Deep-sea crabs inhabit areas of the seabed characterized by muddy substrates. Fishermen realized that these crabs live in muddy zones because the nets hauled up from the ocean floor were often coated in mud. During the monsoon season, when bottom currents intensify and the water temperature drops, these crabs migrate en masse to other locations, alongside various other marine organisms. Fishermen have gained this knowledge through generations of experience; consequently, they cast their nets across the crabs' migration paths on the seabed at night. Not all crabs caught in this manner are edible; it is customary to keep only the desired ones and discard the rest.
