Pebble Crabs

These crabs, characterized by small, stone-like bodies and legs, are found in both offshore and coastal waters. This species has been documented at the Valiyathura pier, Vizhinjam, and Kovalam.

Pebble crabs have been caught alongside other crabs when nets (locally known as kachal) were cast for crabbing at the Valiyathura pier. On one occasion, a specific type of pebble crab came ashore in large numbers at Kovalam. Workers noticed them burying themselves in the sand where the waves break much like land crabs and immediately informed FML. We arrived, collected the crabs, set aside a few specimens that appeared distinct to hand over to the Department of Aquatic Biology and Fisheries at the University of Kerala, and released the rest back into the sea. Information received from the university confirmed that they were the species Ryphila cancellus. This incident occurred in November. Although we monitored that specific location in Kovalam during the month of November in subsequent years, we never witnessed such a phenomenon again. The pebble crabs collected from the Vizhinjam region were all obtained from nets set on the seabed at depths of 28–30 meters. The tips of all their legs are pointed; consequently, it is assumed that they cannot swim.
