കടൽ പൂക്കൾ (Kadal pookkal )

തീരക്കടൽ പാറപ്പാരുകളിൽ കാണുന്ന ജീവിയാണ് ഇത്.കാഴ്ചയിൽ പൂക്കൾ പോലെ തോന്നുമെങ്കിലും ഇവ ഒരുതരം കടൽ ജന്തുവാണ്. പല വർണ്ണങ്ങളിൽ കാണപ്പെടുന്നതിനാലാണ് ഇവയെ പൂക്കളായി തെറ്റിദ്ധരിക്കുന്നത്. കടൽപ്പണി സമൂഹത്തിന് ഇവയെ കൊണ്ട് പ്രത്യേക പ്രയോജനം ഒന്നുമില്ല. കടലിനടിയിലെ പാറകളുടെ ഇടയിൽ ജീവിക്കുന്നവയായതിനാൽ അവിടെ വിടുന്ന വലകളിലും മറ്റും ഇവ ലഭിക്കാറുമില്ല. ചുരുക്കത്തിൽ കടലിനടിയിൽ എത്തിയാൽ മാത്രമേ ഇവയെ കാണാനാവൂ.

കരയിൽ എത്തുമ്പോൾ ഇവയുടെ തൂവലുകൾ ചുരുങ്ങി ഭംഗി നഷ്ടപ്പെടും. കന്യാകുമാരി ജില്ലയിലെ കടലിൽ ചിലയിടങ്ങളിൽ ഇവ കൂട്ടത്തോടെ വളരുന്നത് കണ്ടിട്ടുണ്ടെങ്കിലും തിരുവനന്തപുരത്തെയും കൊല്ലത്തെയും കടലിൽ ഇവ ഒറ്റപ്പെട്ടാണ് കാണുന്നത്. പകൽസമയങ്ങളിൽ dive ചെയ്യുമ്പോൾ ഇവയെ പ്രതികരണം ഒന്നുമില്ലാതെ കാണുമെങ്കിലും ഈ ജീവി രാത്രിയിൽ dive ചെയ്യുമ്പോൾ ടോർച്ച് വെട്ടത്തിൽ അവയുടെ തൂവലുകൾ വേഗത്തിൽ ചലിപ്പിച്ച് പ്രതികരിക്കുന്നത് കാണാം.

പുറമെ കണ്ണില്ലാത്ത ഒരു ജീവിയാണ് ഇതെങ്കിലും കണ്ണിനു സമാനമായി പ്രവർത്തിക്കുന്ന സെൻസറുകൾ ഇവയുടെ ശരീരത്തിൽ ഉണ്ടാവാം എന്നാണ് ഇതിൽ നിന്നും മനസ്സിലാക്കേണ്ടത്.

Feather Stars

These creatures are found on rocky reefs in coastal waters. Although they resemble flowers, they are actually a type of marine animal; they are often mistaken for flowers due to their vibrant, varied colors. They offer no particular utility to the fishing community. Since they inhabit crevices in underwater rocks, they are rarely caught in fishing nets. In short, one can only see them by diving underwater.When brought ashore, their feathery arms contract, causing them to lose their beauty. While they have been observed growing in clusters in certain parts of the sea off Kanyakumari district, they are usually found in isolation in the waters off Thiruvananthapuram and Kollam. During daytime dives, they appear motionless; however, during night dives, they react to the beam of a torchlight by rapidly moving their feathery arms.

Although they lack visible eyes, this behavior suggests the presence of sensors on their bodies that function similarly to eyes.
