(Kadal kaakkakal) / Sea birds.
Sea birds.
For anyone standing on the shore gazing out at the sea, the sight of birds flying over the water skimming just above the surface is a fascinating one. Years ago, I observed a foreign friend named Steve Creech spending a considerable amount of time on the Valiathura sea bridge. Before leaving, he mentioned that he had counted over a hundred sea birds passing by during that brief period. I often wondered where these constantly flying birds went to rest. Intrigued by the large number of birds flying southward, I once set out on a boat journey and eventually discovered some of their resting spots. I saw hundreds of birds resting on a massive rock rising from the coastal waters off Colachel in the Kanyakumari district. Later, I realized that the rocks in the sea off Inayam served as another habitat for them; specifically, the top of a rock known as 'Thodikallu' had acquired a unique appearance over the years due to the accumulation of bird droppings.
Sea birds do not rest solely on such rocks; if a piece of debris drifts by, passing birds will often land on it to rest. The presence of sea birds on the floating pipes used for sea reclamation during the Adani Port construction was a common sight. Although there are many species of sea birds, those who work at sea generally refer to all of them simply as 'Kadal Kaakkakal' (sea crows).
