Kadalarippans
This is a coastal marine fish that inhabits rocky reefs. They typically measure 10–15 cm in length and possess very small mouths; their bodies often feature patterns of stripes, spots, and markings. They are likely named 'Kadalarippan' (meaning 'sea-pecker' or 'sea-nibbler') because they spend their time actively swimming and constantly pecking at the biological layers covering the rocks. Fisherfolk do not catch them for food. Another colorful presence on these coastal rocky reefs is the group of fish collectively known as 'Damsels' (Damselfish); local fishermen refer to these, too, as 'Kadalarippan'. Interesting observations have been made regarding these damselfish. At the Thaikkapalli seaweed colony in Kovalam—where the water is only about three meters deep—one can see an abundance of damselfish with white markings on their tails. However, a short distance away at the 'Mulavarakkallu' soft coral colony, located at a depth of 12 meters, brown-colored damselfish are plentiful. Similarly, blue damselfish were observed at the worm colony in Adimalathura, near Vizhinjam.
