Kadanthalukal (Scorpion fishes and Related Reef Fishes)
Common groups include scorpionfishes, lionfishes, and stonefishes belonging to the family Scorpaenidae.
Kadanthalukal are small but beautiful reef fishes that survive by hiding venomous spines within their fins and body structures. Despite their attractive appearance, many species possess dangerous venom used for protection against predators.
Among them is a well-known variety locally called *Thumba*, commonly referring to lionfish species such as the Red Lionfish or related lionfishes. These fishes are often seen gracefully spreading their fins and slowly moving around rocky reefs. During underwater observations, Thumba usually do not panic or hide when approached by divers. In short, they display behavior that is very friendly toward underwater photography and videography.
Lionfishes and related species are easily recognized by their long feather-like fin rays, striped body patterns, and slow elegant movements. However, the spines on their fins contain venom that can cause severe pain when touched.
Kadanthalukal, including Thumba, are generally not considered edible fish along the coast.
Another important member of this group is the Reef Stonefish, locally known as *Kallumalsyam* (Stonefish). It is considered one of the most venomous fishes found in the sea.
Stonefishes are masters of camouflage and can change their coloration to match their surroundings. Because of this ability, they are often described as a diver’s nightmare. They usually remain motionless on rocky reefs, blending perfectly with stones and corals, making them extremely difficult to identify underwater.
FML has documented stonefishes from the coastal waters of Kovalam, Vizhinjam, and the sea near Kochuthura. The individual recorded in Vizhinjam was observed during a night dive.
