15-20 cm മാത്രം വലിപ്പമുള്ളതും അധികം മാംസം ഇല്ലാത്തതും ശരീരത്തിൽ നിറയെ മുള്ളുകളുള്ളതുമായ മത്സ്യമാണ് ഇവ. സമുദ്രത്തിന്റെ ഏതാണ്ട് ഇടത്തട്ടിൽ കരയിൽ നിന്നും ഒത്തിരി അകലെയാല്ലാതെ കാണപ്പെടുന്നു.

ഒഴുക്കൻ വലകളിലാണ് ഇവ ലഭിച്ചിരുന്നത്. പത്തോളം ഇനങ്ങൾ കണ്ടെത്തിയിട്ടുണ്ടെങ്കിലും ഇവയിൽ എല്ലാത്തിന്റെയും ലഭ്യതയിൽ കഴിഞ്ഞ രണ്ടിലേറെ പതിട്ടാണ്ടുകളായി വലിയ ഇടിവുണ്ടായിട്ടുണ്ട്.

ഭക്ഷ്യയോഗ്യമായ ഇവ ഫ്രൈ ചെയ്യാനാണ് ഉത്തമം.

Kuttavus and Kolavus.

These are small fish measuring only 15–20 cm that have little flesh and bodies covered in spines. They are found in the mid-water layers of the sea, relatively close to the shore.They were traditionally caught using drift nets. Although around ten species have been identified, the availability of all of them has seen a significant decline over the past two decades.These fish are edible and are best suited for frying.
