Perumkannikal (Bigeye Fishes)

Common species include the Moontail Bigeye.
Perumkannikal are red-colored fishes with very large, protruding eyes, which is the reason for their local name “Perumkanni” (meaning “big eyes”). These fishes are often caught accidentally in hook-and-line fishing and in nets, rather than through targeted fishing. Their exact habitat distribution is not clearly understood.
Although they are not commonly observed in coastal rocky reefs, FML has documented a small group of bigeye fishes under the Valiyathura bridge area. Juveniles have also been observed drifting among floating seaweed mats, using them as shelter and transport in coastal waters.
There are slight morphological differences between bigeye fishes found in nearshore coastal waters and those found in deeper offshore regions. Their skin is relatively thick compared to many other reef fishes.
In coastal communities, they are among the few fish species whose skin is traditionally removed before cooking due to its toughness.
Because of their large eyes, reminiscent of the Malayalam film actress Unni Mary, coastal communities have informally nicknamed them “Unnimary” in recent times.
