. Kalavakal (Groupers)

Common species found in Kerala waters include the Malabar Grouper and other reef-associated grouper species.
In Kerala, there is hardly anyone who eats seafood who is not familiar with groupers (Kalavakal). Although groupers are primarily deep-sea reef fishes, some species move closer to coastal rocky reefs and even use these shallow reef areas as breeding grounds.
Reef sites such as Karakkal in Kovalam, Narimeen Kallu, and Perumakkal in Adimalathura are known traditional breeding and aggregation grounds for these fishes.
Along the outer sea, there is a seasonal period when water temperature decreases significantly. Fishermen refer to this phenomenon as “Kulinir” (cold water season)—a period when cooler currents flow through the offshore waters. During this season, it is traditionally believed that groupers from deeper offshore reefs migrate to relatively shallower reef areas.
FML documentation has recorded a species locally referred to as *Aluva*, which is regularly observed around artificial reefs and shipwrecks. These fish are seen only in small numbers, making their presence particularly notable and worthy of further scientific study.
In earlier times, fishermen used to travel to offshore reef structures specifically known as kalava kettukal (grouper aggregation reefs) and return with large catches of groupers.
Highly skilled fishermen from each village specialized in catching groupers from these reef systems. In Thiruvananthapuram, a reef site known as Varkala Kettu was historically famous for its abundance of groupers.
Traditional fishing vessels known as “thankal vallams” were specially used for this purpose. These boats would set sail with sails to offshore waters, remain at sea for several days, and return with grouper catches preserved in salt.
