മാന്തലുകൾ or മണങ്കുകൾ

MAANTHAL OR MANANGUKAL

FML has documented more than 30 species of this flat-bodied fish.
Manthal, which range in size from 10 cm to 30 cm, live in the mud flats at the bottom of the ocean. Manthal are a variety of migratory fishes. The Manthal season begins in mid-June every year in Thiruvananthapuram. The season lasts until the end of October. Workers from only few coastal villages go to fish Manthal. The season lasts until the end of October. They migrate from south to north. Special nets that can be set on the seabed are used in catching Manthal. It is believed that Manthal migrate by selecting the mud flats at the bottom of the ocean in which they share their habitat with special crabs, lobsters, snakes, conches etc. Moreover, while they are available from the south in the early part of the season, their presence gradually shifts northward during the end of the season.
