മധിനം

കാണാൻ നല്ല ഭംഗിയും അര മീറ്ററോളം വലിപ്പവുമുള്ള മധിനങ്ങൾക്ക് മറ്റു മത്സ്യങ്ങൾക്ക് ഇല്ലാത്ത ഒരു പ്രത്യേകതയുണ്ട്. അവയുടെ വാൽച്ചിറക് തുടങ്ങുന്നതിനു തൊട്ടു മുമ്പായി ഇരുവശങ്ങളിലും നല്ല മൂർച്ചയുള്ളതും മഞ്ഞ നിറത്തോടുകൂടിയതുമായ ഓരോ മുള്ളുകൾ ഉണ്ട്. കോവളത്തെ പാറപ്പാരുകൾ പ്രത്യേകിച്ച് കരക്കല്ല് ഇവയുടെ ഒരു പ്രധാന താവളമാണ്. തീരക്കടൽ പാറപ്പാരുകളോട് ചേർന്ന് വലവിടുന്നവർക്ക് ഇത് ലഭിക്കാറുണ്ട്. ഭക്ഷ്യയോഗ്യമാണ്. രുചികരമല്ല.

Madhinam

 These fish, which are visually striking and grow to a size of about half a meter, possess a unique feature not found in other fish: a pair of sharp, yellow-colored spines located on either side, just before the base of the tail fin. Rocky reefs off the coast of Kovalam particularly the "Karakkallu" formations serve as a primary habitat for them. They are often caught by fishermen casting nets near these coastal rocky reefs. While edible, they are not considered tasty.
