NEMMEEN

Nemmeen is a delicious and fairly expensive fish for Keralites. One of the surface dwelling fishes in our sea, and except along the coastal waters Nemmeen is found almost everywhere in the ocean. Only expert seamen can catch Nemmeen with bait, although it can be caught in bait and nets. These are very fast-moving fishes. Therefore, they will try to escape by swimming away fast, when they are caught. If the person holding the end of the fishing line in his hand does not handle it properly during that race for life, they will break the line and escape. Since Nemmeen have very sharp teeth and are likely to break-off the fishing line with it, the bait should be tied to a silver wire about one foot long to avoid this. In short, Nemmeen can only be caught with intelligence and skill.
A smaller species of Nemmeen found is called Karayilavu. Another species that looks like Nemmeen is called Ooriyameen. Ooriyameen is a fish that moves faster than Nemmeen. In the myths of the sea-workers community, Nemmen represents symbol of male beauty. The myths suggest that the Nemmen that appear to move on solitary, strong and are agile, are the ones who give the fish-beauties of the sea some sleepless times.
