വെള്ളച്ചിപ്പി. (Vellachippi ) - Oyster
ഈ ഇനത്തിൽപ്പെട്ട ചിപ്പികളെ കോവളം കടലിലേക്ക് തള്ളി നിൽക്കുന്ന പാറക്കൂട്ടങ്ങൾക്കിടയിൽ കാണാം. ഇവയുടെ പുറം തോടിന് ഏതാണ്ട് വെള്ളനിറമായതിനാൽ കടൽ പണിക്കാർ ഇതിനെ വെള്ളച്ചിപ്പി എന്നു വിളിക്കുന്നു. സാധാരണ ചിപ്പികളുടെ തോടിനെക്കാൾ കൂടുതൽ ഉറപ്പുള്ള തോട് ഇതിനുണ്ട്. മുതുവ ചിപ്പിയുടെ അത്ര മുഴുപ്പുള്ള ഇവയുടെ മാംസം ഭക്ഷ്യയോഗ്യമാണ്. എന്നാൽ പാറകളിൽ നിന്നും ഇവയെ ചെത്തിയെടുക്കാൻ പാടായത്തിനാൽ അധികമാരും മിനക്കേടാറില്ല.കടലിന്റെ പാതി മുങ്ങി നിൽക്കുന്ന പാറയുടെ ജലനിരപ്പിന് മുകളിലായുള്ള ഭാഗത്തും തൊട്ടടിയിൽ ഉള്ള ഭാഗത്തും ഇവയെ കൂടുതൽ കാണാം.

White Oyster (Vellachippi)

Oysters of this type can be found among the rocky outcrops that extend into the sea at Kovalam. Local fisherfolk call them Vellachippi (“white shell”) because their outer shell is almost white in colour.

Their shells are considerably harder and more robust than those of ordinary oysters. The meat is edible and is roughly comparable in size to that of the Muthuva Chippi. However, because these oysters are difficult to pry off the rocks, few people take the trouble to collect them.

They are most commonly found on partially submerged rocks, both on the portions just above the waterline and on the areas immediately below it.
