പൈന്തികളും തറട്ടകളും

വളരെ അപൂർവ്വമായേ ഈ മത്സ്യങ്ങളെ ഇന്ന് കാണാനാവൂ. പരന്ന ശരീരവും വലിയ ചിറകുകളും ആണ് ഇവയുടെ പ്രത്യേകത. കടലിൽ ഇവ സഞ്ചരിക്കുന്നത് കാണാൻ വളരെ മനോഹരമാണ്.
തറട്ടയെ അപേക്ഷിച്ചു പൈന്തികൾക്ക് നീണ്ട ചിറകുകൾ ആണുള്ളത്. മുൻകാലങ്ങളിൽ ഇവയെ ആഴം കൂടിയ കടലിലെ പാരുകളിൽ നിന്നും ലഭിക്കുമായിരുന്നു. 1993 ആന്റണി, കെൻ എന്നിവർ പൊഴിയൂരിൽ 23 മീറ്റർ ആഴമുള്ള കടലിലെ കൃത്രിമ പാരിൽ നിന്നും ഇവയെ ക്യാമറയിൽ പകർത്തിയിട്ടുണ്ട്. തീരക്കടൽ പാറപ്പാരുകളിൽ എവിടെയും ഇവ രണ്ടിനെയും സാധാരണ കണ്ടിട്ടില്ല എങ്കിലും കോവളത്തെ കരക്കല്ലിനടുത്തായി ഇവ രണ്ടിന്റെയും കുഞ്ഞുങ്ങളെ കഴിഞ്ഞ 10 വർഷത്തിനിടെ ഓരോ തവണ കണ്ടെത്താൻ കഴിഞ്ഞിട്ടുണ്ട്.

Batfish

 These fish are rarely seen today. They are characterized by their flat bodies and large fins. Watching them swim in the sea is a beautiful sight.

Compared to other batfish varieties, the Longfin Batfish possesses notably long fins. In the past, they were found around deep-sea reefs. In 1993, Antony and Ken captured images of them at an artificial reef located at a depth of 23 meters off Pozhiyoor. Although neither species is commonly sighted at standard coastal rocky reefs, juveniles of both have been spotted once each near the 'Karakkallu' (near-shore rocky outcrop) at Kovalam over the past decade.
