തോലൻ

അടിത്തട്ട് മത്സ്യമായ തോലൻ ഒരു പാര്മൽസും കൂടിയാണ്. എല്ലാ തോലനുകളുടെയും ചുണ്ട് നല്ല തടിച്ചതും ചില തോലനുകളുടെ പുറത്തും ചിറകിലും വരകളും പൊട്ടുകളും ഉള്ളതായും കാണാം. കട്ടിയുള്ള പുറംതോൽ ഉള്ളതിനാലാണ് ഇവയെ തോലൻ എന്ന് വിളിക്കുന്നത്. കൃത്രിമ പാരുകൾ ഉൾപ്പെടെയുള്ള പാരുകളിൽ ഇവയെ കണ്ടിട്ടുണ്ട്. അപൂർവ്വമായേ ഇവ തീരക്കടൽ പാരുകളിൽ വരാറുള്ളൂ. എങ്കിലും വിഴിഞ്ഞത്തും കോവളത്തും ഇവയുടെ കുഞ്ഞുങ്ങളെ കണ്ടിട്ടുണ്ട്.

THOLAN

Though a bottom-dwelling fish, Tholan is also known as a reef- fish. All species of Tholans have very thick lips and some Tholans have stripes and spots on their backs and fins. They are called as Tholan because of their thick skin. They have frequently been seen in reefs, including artificial reefs. They rarely come to coastal reefs. However, their young ones have been reported from Vizhinjam and Kovalam.
