(Anchaala) / Pike Congers

'Anchaalakal' are caught in Thiruvananthapuram district during the season for Manthal (flatfish) nets. To catch Manthal, nets are deployed along the seabed, typically at an average depth of 30 meters. Night fishing is another characteristic feature of this fishery. Along with Manthal, various other bottom-dwelling organisms including Anchaalakal are also caught. Although Anchaalakal offer no specific utility to humans, they are a vital link in marine biodiversity. While they resemble snakes in appearance, there are no known instances of them harming fishermen.
