(Polakal) / Snapper fishes

'Pola'
This is one of the fish species that permanently inhabits the rocky reefs . They are found in environments ranging from near-shore breakwaters to deep-sea reefs. There are various types of 'Pola', such as Pola, Varappola, Pallan Pola, and Pelapola. While some species live in large shoals, others live in smaller groups or in isolation. On average, they range in size from 20 cm to 35 cm. When traditional reef fishermen reach the fishing grounds, they often begin by catching a few 'Pola' using small hooks and bait; this serves to confirm the location of the reef. Subsequently, they use larger hooks and bait to catch bigger predatory fish. Consequently, traditional fishermen rarely targeted 'Pola' extensively. However, with the recent rise in fishing practices using lights and nets on the reefs, the trend has shifted towards catching 'Pola' in large quantities as well.
