Bivalves (known locally as kakkakal) – There are numerous species of bivalves in the waters off Thiruvananthapuram. Like oysters, they are creatures with two shells; however, unlike oysters, which remain firmly attached to rocks, these bivalves live by burrowing into or crawling across the sandy seabed. Some varieties also inhabit rocky outcrops in coastal waters. Before the invention of cement, a community in the Pulluvila region of Thiruvananthapuram earned a livelihood by collecting these bivalves from the seashore and processing them into lime. Coastal communities refer to the smaller bivalves with thin shells as kokkarakal. Once dead, their empty shells known as kokkarappali would wash ashore with the currents. Their arrival on the shore has significantly decreased in recent times.
