ശംഖ്കൾ (shankhukal )/ Univalves
കട്ടിയുള്ള ഒരു ബാഹ്യ ആവരണവും അതിനുള്ളിൽ ജീവനുള്ള മാംസവും ഇതാണ് പൊതുവേ ശംഖുകൾ അഥവാ യൂണിവാൽവുകൾ. കടൽ പണിക്കാർ ഇതിനെ ശംഖ്കൾ എന്നാണ് വിളിക്കുന്നത്. ചിപ്പി തൊഴിലാളികളാണ് ഇവയെ അതിന്റെ ആവാസയിടത്തിൽ നേരിൽ കാണാറുള്ളത്. അതുപ്രകാരം നിരവധി ശംഖിനങ്ങൾ കടലിലുണ്ട്. ഇതിൽ വിരലിലെണ്ണാവുന്നവ മാത്രമാണ് മനുഷ്യൻ ശേഖരിക്കുകയും ഉപയോഗിക്കു കയും ചെയ്യുന്നത്. വിവിധ ശംഖ്കൾ വ്യത്യസ്ത ആവാസ വ്യവസ്ഥകളിൽ ജീവിക്കുന്നു. മണലിൽ പുതഞ്ഞും പാറപ്പാരുകളിലുമാണ് ഇവയുടെ വാസം. ചിലത് മണലിനു മുകളിൽ കാണുമ്പോൾ ഏറെയും മണലിൽ പുതഞ്ഞു ജീവിക്കുന്നു. ചിലത് പാറകളുടെ മുകളിൽ കാണുമ്പോൾ ഏറെയും പാറപ്പാരുകളുടെ ചെറിയ കുഴികളിലും പൊത്തുകളിലും കഴിയുന്നു.
വിഴിഞ്ഞം തുറമുഖത്തിനായി ആദ്യമായി ജഡ്ജിങ് നടത്തിയപ്പോൾ അതിലൂടെ ചത്തൊടുങ്ങി കരക്കടിഞ്ഞ ശംഖ്കളുടെയും മറ്റും അവശിഷ്ടങ്ങൾ കരളലിയിക്കുന്ന കാഴ്ചയാണ്. അതിനാൽ അതിൽനിന്നും ഇത്തരം ജീവികൾ ഏറെയും കടൽത്തറയിലെ മണലിനുള്ളിൽ വസിക്കുന്നു എന്ന് വേണം കരുതാൻ.
ഈ അറിവിന്റെ അടിസ്ഥാനത്തിൽ വന്ധ്യമായ കടൽത്തറ എന്നർത്ഥം വരുന്ന Barren seabed എന്ന പ്രയോഗം തിരുത്തപ്പെടേണ്ടതാണ്. ശംഖ്കളിൽ മനുഷ്യർക്ക് ഉപകരിക്കുന്ന ചില ഇനങ്ങളെ പറ്റി പറയാം.
Univalves
consist of a hard outer shell enclosing the living soft body of the animal. While those who work at sea refer to them generally as shankhukal, it is the shellfish collectors who encounter them directly in their natural habitats. There is a vast array of such species in the ocean, yet humans collect and utilize only a handful of them. These creatures inhabit diverse environments; some live buried in the sand, while others dwell among rocky outcrops. Although some are found on the surface of the sand, the majority live submerged within it. Similarly, while some are spotted on the rocks, most reside in the small crevices and hollows of rocky formations.
The sight of the remains of these creatures dead and washed ashore following the initial dredging operations for the Vizhinjam Port was truly heart-wrenching. This suggests that a significant number of these organisms inhabit the sand on the seabed.
In light of this understanding, the term "barren seabed"implying a lifeless ocean floor needs to be reconsidered. Let us now discuss a few species of univalves that are useful to humans.
